A summary of
Storytelling with AI: Tools and Techniques

How can AI help you tell a story? In this workshop you’ll learn where AI works (and where it doesn’t), and how to become more successful at three different levels of the storytelling process: brainstorming, development, and iteration. You’ll leave with a new tool to enhance your creativity, generate innovative story ideas, and incorporate user feedback to refine your stories. We’ll look at many examples of stories across different situations—written and oral, speeches and presentations, emails and social media, as tools of persuasion and inspiration—and discover how AI can complement, not replace, the power of human storytelling. Through directed exercises and collaborative learning, this workshop can be useful to any level of practitioner, offering a hands-on experience with live-action AI-assisted writing practice and immediate feedback.

Learning Outcomes

  • Experience the potential of AI through live demonstrations, practice, and immediate feedback

  • Understand where AI will help you (and where it won’t)

  • Take away concrete techniques for crafting effective prompts

  • Take ethical considerations into account when using AI in storytelling, including how to avoid biases and potential negative outcomes

  • Learn how to incorporate feedback to refine your output

  • Enhance your creativity and innovation across a variety of story types

. . . and many more

Meet your instructor, Arthur Thuot

Hi! I’m Arthur, and I’ve helped people tell stories since 2007, when I got an unusual job connecting brands with investors. Senior executives and government ministers wanted to reach an international audience. My role was to shape their stories, working 11 months of the year from “no fixed place of address.” (I signed the contract, so it must have been legal.) I lived in Europe, Latin America, and Asia-Pacific, telling hundreds of stories in healthcare, energy, technology, aerospace, education, and financial services.

In 2014, I pulled a “reverse sell-out” and did a Master’s in Fine Arts in Creative Writing at the University of Florida, where I taught super-talented undergraduates who now work at companies like Amazon, Tesla, Lockheed Martin, and SpaceX. Pretty impressive, but my biggest success as a teacher may be the students who skipped the corporate world to play in the NFL.

In 2017, I moved back to Canada and began training professionals through the University of Ottawa and the University of British Columbia. Before long, the sessions were selling out, so I founded StoryCorp to offer the same quality of training with greater flexibility for private clients. Now, I’m happy to offer Storytelling with AI: Tools and Techniques as StoryCorp’s first public workshop.

Why this workshop, and why now?

I’ve been using generative AI since the first week that ChatGPT was released, back in 2022. I can say that in some cases, some of the time, AI has helped me and my clients enormously. But like any powerful tool, it’s important to know when and where to use it. The why of AI matters just as much as the how. For anyone serious about writing and storytelling, you’ve got to think carefully about what AI means to you.

I began writing for publication in my university days at The Western Gazette. Beyond my work at the student newspaper, I wrote an award-winning case study for a professor who briefly disappeared during the first Gulf War to optimize military deployments in the Middle East. After graduation, I wrote for a media agency, and then independently under the Forbes and Fortune and Bloomberg banners. I’ve also written creative works, and edited the works of others.

That’s a lot of writing, and a lot of stories. As someone who has spent a few decades of writing stories without AI, and a few years of writing stories with it, I look forward to helping you make the most of your stories in an age when the human touch is more urgent than ever.

Mini Quiz: Storytelling with AI

Rate each statement 1–4: 1 = Strongly Disagree • 2 = Disagree • 3 = Agree • 4 = Strongly Agree

Answered: 0/10
1) Target & Outcome — Before I draft a story, I can always name one audience and one action I want them to take.
2) Notes → Narrative — I can turn story notes/ideas into a structured, compelling story.
3) Perfect Prompting — When I use AI, I give it a structured prompt (Task, Context, Examples, Persona, Format, Tone) instead of a one-liner.
4) Voice Control — I can get AI to learn/retain my voice or my organization’s voice and apply it consistently.
5) Data → Story — I turn stats/charts into human stories with stakes (“so what?”) and outcomes.
6) Option-Hunting — I ask AI for multiple versions, critique them, and combine the best for my needs.
7) Guardrails — I have an effective system (sources, fact-checks, constraints) to avoid overclaiming/hallucinations.
8) Audience Remix — I can adapt a story to connect with executives, technical teams, and the public without losing the point.
9) Last-Mile Polish — I create stories with strong titles, hooks, meanings, messages, and CTAs.
10) Personal AI Playbook — I’ve got a one-page AI playbook: when to use/not use AI, where to draw the line, and how to handle privacy, attribution/IP, and approvals.
